Nishmat Abraham - Updated & expanded edition

By Prof. A.S. Abraham, M.D., F.R.C.P

Since the publication of the first volume of Nishmat Avraham some 25 years ago, the rapid advances in medicine each with it's own halachic questions and problems, the numerous new and unpublished responsa, both written and oral that the author received from the major poskim of today such as Rav Sh.Z. Auerbach and Rav Waldenberg zt"l, Rav Eliashiv, Rav Ovadia Yosef, Rav Wosner and Rav Neuwirth  shlita and the need to collate them, each under its own section of the Shulchan Aruch, made this new expanded edition a must.

Over 40% of this four volume set of Nishmat Avraham on Medical Halacha (almost 3000 pages) consists of new responsa and new medical halachic rulings. As before, it is a commentary on the four sections of the Shulchan Aruch with detailed references from the Talmud through Rishonim and Acharonim. In it one can find thousands of rulings gleaned from the vast sea of halachic literature, including the most up-to-date material from great contemporary authorities all over the world such as Rav M. Feinstein zt"l as well as from the poskim mentioned above.

Problems as far ranging as the doctor and patient on weekdays and Shabbat, Yom Kippur and Pesach, in the hospital or at home, hospice, end of life and brain death, pregnancy and assisted reproduction, contraception and abortion, brit milah and the medical problems of niddah, medical malpractice and claims, genetic engineering and cloning, DNA and stem cells, AIDS and herpes, the threatened doctor and the psychiatric patient, Hatzalah and preventive medicine and their attendant problems in halacha are but some of the issues discussed by the author.

The opinions of all these leading authorities are of particular importance in this survey which covers virtually every issue in medical halacha. Their views are comprehensively summarized on each point, elucidating the underlying principles of contemporary issues. Thus it is ideal for structuring a systematic syllabus. In addition, its extensive and detailed indices make it a perfect reference and research tool.

The set should be required for every halachist and health professional.

Chapters in the Pathology of the Talmud

By Prof. Avraham Steinberg

Halachic explanations and medical interpretations pertaining to pathological knowledge in Jewish law, presented in modern medical terminology with detailed references. Vital medical halachic material for anyone interested in Hullin and Bechorot.

The sages of the Talmud contributed to medicine mostly in the field of anatomical pathology. They were pioneers in this area, one thousand years before its development in modern medicine. Some of the Talmudic rabbis devoted years to studying anatomy and pathology in both animals and humans. One said that he spent eighteen months on a farm to learn how to distinguish permanent from passing lesions (Sanh. 5b). The Talmudic rabbis were among the first to perform on humans post-mortem, embryonic, gynecological, GI examinations, and more.

In addition, they broadly studied animal anatomy and pathology to establish the principles of kashrut.

The Talmud describes a wide variety of pathological conditions, some of them rare. Published in the year 5735, the book combines medical, halachic, and historical perspectives, providing a complete picture of the Talmudic sources.

Invaluable for those already trained in anatomy and halacha.

94 pp. Hard cover.
