עבודות המחקר שנעשו בשנים האחרונות מבהירות את הקשר הסיבתי שבין העישון לבין מחלות הלב והריאות. ניתן לראות בעליל כיצד הורס המעשן את בריאותו ופוגע בהתמדה בשתי מערכות כה חיוניות. בגלל מספרם הרב של המעשנים מהווה העישון אחד הגורמים החשובים ביותר בתחלואה ובתמותה, ומהווה בעיה עצומה בבריאות הציבור. בארה"ב מתנהל בשנים האחרונות מאבק ציבורי נמרץ נגד העישון, ואמנם מאבק זה החל לתת את אותותיו, ומסתמנת ירידה במספר המעשנים, ועמה ירידה בתחלואה ובתמותה. בארץ אין עדיין מאמץ מספיק במלחמה בעישון. אולם הנסיון בארה"ב מעודד ומראה שמאבק כזה אפשרי ונושא פירות.
