My mother, who died of ovarian cancer, was found to be a carrier of a specific genetic mutation that greatly increases the risk of breast and ovarian cancer in women. I am a man, and I have 2 daughters. What are the halachic issues involved with having a genetic test at all, and if I am tested and found to carry the mutation, what are the halachic implications of this knowledge, i.e. what can one do or not do with information of this nature?
Thank you
If a female is a carrier of BRAC1 or BRCA2 (mutations that greatly increases the risk of Breast and ovarian cancer), she can reduce the risk by prophylactic mastectomy.
In your case, the probability that your daughters do not carry that mutation is much greater then the probability that they do.
Therefore it is advised not to do the tests before their marriage.
