Hi,I was a member of the Schlesinger Institute 2 years ago, and someone just approached me with a question. The grandmother is in her 80s with severe dementia. She is awake, but not responsive – they described her as being mostly asleep with infrequent yawning or blinking and she does not swallow when hand fed. A week ago, she was able to feed herself. Recently she broke her hip and following the surgery she is in the condition described. The doctors are not confident that she would be able to regain the ability to feed herself. She is currently on a nasogastric feeding tube and the doctors have mentioned implanting a tube to feed the patient. The problem is that the family is reluctant to get into a life support issue where they could never disconnect the tube if it became clear that the patient would never recover. What options do they have in the context of hallacha and what sources are available that I could show them?Sincerely,
1. It is not clear that the patient would never recover.
2. I have no information on the degree of her suffering.
3. I it seems that treatment should be continued.
