I’m sorry for having taken so long to thank you for sending the article, which I received two weeks ago. I really do appreciate it. It was exactly what I was looking for. If I would like to ask a question concerning the article, to whom would I address it?
I recently heard (on radio program in the UK called “Woman’s Hour”) that the IVF treatment is such that the danger of ovarian cancer is real (due to the hormones injected for super-ovulation to occur). Apparently no official statistical data is available since infertility is good business for many doctors, fertility clinics, and drug companies (this is what some doctors were saying on this show). Is it possible to receive some feedback concerning this claim from the doctors in your institution?
Please see the following article for information on the danger of ovarian cancer following IVF: BC Tarlatzis, G Grimbizis, J Bontis, S Mantalenakis. “Ovarian stimulation and ovarian tumours: a critical reappraisal.” Human Reproduction Update 1, no. 3 (May 1995): 284-301.
From the abstract:
The available data from epidemiological studies and case reports do not support a direct causal relationship between ovarian stimulation and ovarian cancer. However, it is possible that ovarian stimulants may have an augmenting role for special categories of tumours, e.g., sex-cord stromal tumours. A definite answer to this important issue may be reached through large prospective epidemiological studies or large retrospective well-designed case-control studies.
Dr. Halperin would like to add: Since publication of this review in May 1995, only one case report of ovarian cancer following HMG has been published. Please see: ME Hull, K Kriner, E Schneider, M Malman. “Ovarian cancer after successful ovulation induction: a case report.” Journal of Reproductive Medicine 41, no. 1 (Jan 1996): 52-4.
Please distinguish between “cancer following HMG,” which, though rare, does exist, and “cancer as a result of HMG,” which has never been proven.
