definition and outline of Jewish medical ethics
Would you be able to give me a clear definition of what Jewish Medical Ethics are? Also, what are its core beliefs, and why, and
What are the "shiurim" (amounts & time)
for someone who must or needs to eat/drink on
Yom Kippur ? (sick person or nursing mother)
1. The measure of food is 30 grams and of fluids 40 ccs (or grams).
2. One must wait at least 9 minutes between each measure of food and the next one and between each measure of fluid and the next one; they should not be taken together.
3. One should not drink water! rather one should take calorie rich fluids – milk, fresh fruit juice, coke, etc. This will also allow one to eat less dring Yom Kippur.
4. Food should be high quality and not "junk". One should eat meat, fish, eggs, potatoes etc.
5. If 9 mimutes is too long for the patient to wait he may lessen the waiting time but not to less than 2 minutes (only if he really needs to do so).
6. One may eat and drink alternatively. For example, if one eats 30 grams between 0700 and 0705 one may then drink 40 ccs between 0705 and 0710, then eat again between 0714 and 0720 and drink again between 0720 and 0725 and so on.
7. One may only eat or drink the total amount that is medically needed – and no more.
8. One should stay home and not go to shul, for, if as a result of going to shul he has to eat or drink more than if he had stayed home, he has transgressed Torah law – even if he was a seriously ill patient who had to eat and drink normally.
