Does Jewish law permit a healthy woman who has tested positive for a mutation in the BRCA 1 gene to undergo a prophylactic bilateral mastectomy? If so, what are the halakhic grounds by which we permit a currently healthy woman to take on the risks of surgery and unknown possibly deleterious long-term consequences of surgery?
