Dr. carrying a pager and answer calls on Shabbat

My name is ***. I have a halachic question that I hoped you could answer.

I am a resident physician in a dermatology program in Los Angeles and I have applied for a one year fellowship position as a Mohs surgeon in New York. Mohs surgery is a field which is dedicated to the surgical removal of skin cancers and the reconstruction of the defects which are created by the removal of the skin cancer — sometimes using skin flaps and grafts. As a fellow, I will be expected to carry the emergency pager for the entire year. Potential emergencies include bleeding, pain, and infection. Am I allowed to carry the pager and answer calls on Shabbat? If so, do I have to carry the pager with a shinuey? Also if so, if the call which I answer is not an emergency do I have to hang up immediately when I learn that it is not an emergency or am I permited to finish the conversation?
