I have a congregant who until his teenage years did not know he was Jewish and was even baptised. Both parents have been confirmed as halachically Jewish by the London Beth Din. The congregant married a giores and is fully committed to a torah way of life and regularly attends daf yomi. His father was not even circumcised.
His parents are elderly and in poor health.
Questions 1. Can he make a mishebeirach – his father does not even hav a Jewish name. 2. His parents wish to be cremated. What advice can you give re burial arrangements 3. Will he be able to sit shiva for them
The question lacks the necessary background information regarding the congregant's parents and what they went through (Many of cases such as this involve a deepseated fear of holocaust survivors who wish to protect their children, and so do not have the status of regular 'Mumarim'-converts). Nevertheless, we can in general say that Halachically:
1. He can make a MiSheberach for them.
2. After their passing, he is to sit Shiva for his parents, like any son does for his parents. He must also say Kadish for them as every other son does.
3. After the parent's passing, the son cannot promote the cremation of the bodies and he is obligated to bring them to a Jewish burial if it is in his hands.
