My rav, Rabbi Mordechai Lebhar of Los Angeles, gave this email to ask a very serious medical halacha question.
I understand that a terminally ill pt being kept alive on machines can be made DNR. However, if that patient vehmently wished not to be kept alive on machines when he was competent, and has no quality of life and is suffering in the hospital and being kept alive on machines, can family comply with his wishes and withdraw care (i.e. respirator) and allow nature to take its course? Thank you.
In the above case, withholding treatment may be permisible. Withdrawing – not.
