שאלה:

I recently received an e-mail from Rabbi – – – . He felt that you would not mind if we asked you a medical-halakhic shayla. My husband and I have been married for just over four years. Two years ago, we consulted a gynecologist who specializes in fertility problems and we discovered that my husband has a condition known as Sertoli-cell-only syndrome.

We spoke to the av beit din, Rabbi – – – , who told us that it would be acceptable for us to use donor sperm for artificial insemination if the donor was not Jewish.

We have attempted artificial insemination twice. I then had a hysteroscopy, which revealed endometriosis, which was cauterized. Artificial insemination was then attempted three more times, with no success. We are now seeing a new gynecologist as we have moved. My new gynecologist recommends that I try IVF.

Is it permissible to have IVF done? Are there any other alternatives open to us? We do not have inexhaustible funds and are concerned that we make the right decisions.
