תצפיות ותחזיות לעתיד

בכנסים מדעיים שנערכו בשנה האחרונה ובדיווחים הרשמיים של ארגון הבריאות העולמי מצטיירת תמונה קודרת למדי של התקדמות והתפשטות מחלת האיידס ברחבי העולם. למעלה ממאה מדינות דיווחו על הופעת מקרי איידס בגבולותיהן, והמספר הולך ועולה. בארה"ב מדברים על 270000 חולים בשנת 1991 , וזאת על בסיס ניתוח קצב עליית מספר המקרים עד כה. לתחזית הקודרת הזו נוספו האכזבות הנוכחיות מתרכיבי החיסון שפותחו ונוסו, והעדר תרופות המסוגלות לחסל את מאגר הנגיף במאכסן. נראה שמדינות מסויימות ביבשת אפריקה, אמריקה ואירופה תיפגענה בצורה קשה יותר מאחרות, ומעמסה כלכלית כבדה ביותר תוטל עליהן לאור יוקר הטיפול הנוכחי בחולים 66 . תחזיות ארגון הבריאות העולמי מדברות על כמיליון חולים בעולם בתחילת העשור הבא, וכמאה מיליון נשאים.

מכל האמור לעיל ברור שיש להגביר המאמץ למניעת המחלה בדרכים העומדות לרשותנו, והן חינוך והסברה בקנה מידה רחב. על הציבור ללמוד כללי התנהגות מסויימים, וקבוצות סיכון חייבות לשנות התנהגותן על מנת להפחית במידה משמעותית את ממדי התפשטותה של מחלה נוראה זו.
