שאלה:

Hi,

My father (Chaim Moshe Meir ben Avigayil) suffered from a sudden cardiac arrest 11 weeks ago and has since then been in a coma. He is 58 yrs and we are trying very hard to stimulate him to pull him out the coma. We have organized a sensory stimulation program that we run for him. My question is regarding Shabbat – what can be done?

Examples from the program:

We ring a bell, bang a tamborine, clap two pieces of wood together (to startle him)

Spreading cream on his body

We place headphones on his ears. Can we ask a goy to turn the diskman on?

We use a flashlight to shine in his eyes – could this be done with a shinui?

There is a shabbat elevator which we use to take him outside, it however sometimes doesn't work, could we ask a goy to take him down in the elevator while we take the steps?

I hope that you can help us with our query,

Thanking you in advance

Why think of being mechallel Shabbat for your father (may Hashem grant him a refuah shlema) when you can mekadesh the Shabbat for him by singing zemirot and learning Torah (Parashat HaShavua, Mishnayot, Gemara, Midrash) at his bedside?
