שאלה:

I am pregnabt and have been diagnosed with anaphospholipid antibody syndrome. We had a son still born because i had a blood clot that traveled to the umbilical cord. My perinatologist has me taking heparin injections to avoid this happening again. I just discovered that the heparin I am using is produced from pig intestine mucous! I need guidance on how to proceed. What are the implications of using medicines derived from pork products? Thank you for your advice.

תשובה:

The only halachic prohibition regarding pig-derived products is against eating them and, under certain circumstances, conductiong business with them. However, it is permissible to use pig-derived products for making shoes & clothing, and in the pharmaceutical industry.

Therefore you should proceed to follow per your perinatologist's instructions.

It is important to emphasize that whenever there is a danger to life, even the prohibition against eating pig products is set aside.
