Definition of 'Choleh' in the Halachah, following Q#3402

שאלה:

How sick does the person (infant, toddler, child, teen or adult) have to be to be considered a "choleh" especially in our generation where most people get worried & pressured, & often even panicky with every little ache, pain or indisposition?

I know people whom if you tell them "no you may not take an acamol for your beginnging or mild or moderate headache" they cry, "What you want me to suffer for hours?".

תשובה:

I presume you are talking about taking medicines on Shabbat. To be permitted to take any medicine on Shabbat one has to be at least in the category of a person who is ill in his whole body and who would, if he could, take to bed because of it. Therefore a headache has to be a bad one enough to make most people go to bed with it e.g a migraine headache. A baby or young child may be given medicine if he is less sick.
