שאלה:

Dear Rabbi Halperin – 

I have a question regarding Jewish parentage and sperm donation. 
If a child of a non-Jewish mother was conceived via IVF by a Jewish sperm donor, is it possible that an Orthodox rabbi would agree that the child has Jewish parentage (even though she is not halachically Jewish)? 
I ask because this is my situation … and my hope is to go through an Orthodox conversion in Israel but can only do so if a halachic authority will determine my paternal line to be Jewish.

תשובה:

A person who's mother was a gentile, and did not undergo Giur (Jewish conversion procedure), is defined Halachically as a gentile for all (halachic-medical) intents and purposes

Nevertheless, Jewish law recognizes the fact that the biological father  is Jewish, so many Poskim encouraged the Giur of such children that are biologically descendant from a Jewish father.

 In summary, if you wholeheartedly wish to undergo Giur, it is our estimation that the orthodox Batei Din will not prevent you from accomplishing this.
