My name is ***. I have a halachic question that I hoped you could answer.
I am a resident physician in a dermatology program in Los Angeles and I have applied for a one year fellowship position as a Mohs surgeon in New York. Mohs surgery is a field which is dedicated to the surgical removal of skin cancers and the reconstruction of the defects which are created by the removal of the skin cancer — sometimes using skin flaps and grafts. As a fellow, I will be expected to carry the emergency pager for the entire year. Potential emergencies include bleeding, pain, and infection. Am I allowed to carry the pager and answer calls on Shabbat? If so, do I have to carry the pager with a shinuey? Also if so, if the call which I answer is not an emergency do I have to hang up immediately when I learn that it is not an emergency or am I permited to finish the conversation?

1. How to carry an emergency pager:
If you live where there is an eruv there is no problem. If there is no Eruv you should carry it in an unusual manner, for example, between your shirt and your vest or strapped to your thigh or upper arm.
2. You are allowed to answer calls on Shabbat when you are on call or when the call may be an emergency one.
