What is the halakhic view on the use of animals as instruments of therapy for the mentally ill/aged/lonely/housebound?
I strongly recommend that you study Rav Shlomo Aviner’s article “Therapy by Domestic Animals,” in Assia 65-66 (1999), pp. 69-71 (Hebrew). Though this article specifically addresses developmentally disabled children, the basic arguments are the same.
